From Reluctant Mum to Kicking Butt

My Martial Arts Journey

Hey there, fellow martial arts enthusiasts and reluctant exercisers-turned-ninjas! I’m about to unleash a tale that might make you chuckle, perhaps inspire, and definitely make you wonder if I’ve got a few screws loose. But hey, that’s all part of the fun, right?

So, picture this: a 20-year-old woman (that’s me, by the way) who’s more anxious than a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, and more self-conscious than a teenager with braces. Yep, that was my life before martial arts entered the scene.

You see, I’m not your typical gym bunny. The idea of sweating in public while trying to contort my body into shapes that resemble fitness seemed about as appealing as a root canal. But then, something changed.

Fastforward…

A husband, four kids and a few decades later, I decided enough was enough. It was time to put on my big girl pants and do something about my fitness (or lack thereof).

Enter Legacy Martial Arts Academy. Now, before you start picturing me as some kind of Jackie Chan in a floral apron, let me set the record straight. I was about as coordinated as a drunken flamingo when I first walked through those doors. But hey, everyone has to start somewhere, right?

Fast forward three years, and here I am, strutting my stuff with my second brown belt wrapped around my waist like a slightly too-tight accessory. Oh, and did I mention I’m gearing up for my third brown belt test, and Black belt at the end of 2024? Yeah, I know, I can barely believe it myself. But hey, stranger things have happened, like pineapple on pizza, am I right?

Martial arts has become my sanctuary, my happy place, my escape from the chaos of daily life. Those classes? They’re not just about punching and kicking (although there’s plenty of that too). They’re about releasing pent-up energy, finding balance (both physically and mentally), and most importantly, having a darn good time.

Confidence

And let’s talk about the confidence boost, shall we? I used to shrink away from any form of attention like a vampire from sunlight. But now? I’ve learned to stand tall, speak up, and never underestimate the power of a killer roundhouse kick. It’s amazing what a little bit of martial arts magic can do, isn’t it?

But perhaps the best part of this whole journey? The friendships. Oh boy, let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like bonding with your fellow warriors over a shared love of high kicks and bad puns. From trading tips on perfecting our forms to commiserating over post-training soreness, these people have become more than just training buddies – they’re family.

So, to all you reluctant exercisers out there, I say this: give Legacy martial arts a shot. You never know, you might just surprise yourself. And hey, even if you don’t end up becoming the next Bruce Lee, at least you’ll have some killer stories to tell at parties, right?

Until next time, keep kicking butt and making waves!

Yours in martial arts madness,

Kate
